squalane in skincare

Squalane in Skincare

Squalane is a lightweight, versatile moisturizer known for its ability to deeply hydrate and protect the skin without feeling heavy or greasy. Derived from plant-based and synthetic sources, squalane mimics the skin’s natural lipids, making it an excellent choice for supporting a healthy, balanced moisture barrier. Its gentle, non-comedogenic nature makes it suitable for all skin types—including sensitive skin and acne-prone skin.

What Is Squalane?

Squalane is a stabilized, hydrogenated form of squalene, a natural lipid found in the skin’s sebum. While our bodies produce squalene naturally, its levels decline with age, contributing to drier and less resilient skin. (Squalane molecules are more stable and effective for use in skincare than squalene.) Modern formulations use ethical, plant-based sources of squalane like sugarcane, olives, and rice bran.

Benefits of Squalane For Skin

  • Hydrates without clogging pores: Provides lasting moisture while feeling light on the skin.

  • Strengthens the skin barrier: Helps reduce water loss and protect the skin from dehydration.

  • Soothes and calms: Relieves redness and irritation.

  • Balances oil production: Helps regulate excess oil.

  • Protects from oxidative stress: Offers antioxidant properties to guard against environmental damage.

  • Improves suppleness: Enhances skin elasticity, leaving it smoother and healthier-looking.

What Type of Skincare Products is Squalane Typically Used In?

  • Facial oils and serums: For targeted hydration and skin barrier support.

  • Moisturizers: Enhances creams to boost hydration and lock in moisture.

  • Balms and masks: Intensely nourishes dry, flaky, or irritated skin.

  • Body oils and lotions: Softens and smooths larger areas of the skin without feeling heavy.

Thanks to its compatibility with most formulations, squalane can be included across many skincare products. We included it in our Multi-Acid Milk AHA Peel formula to help soften and hydrate the skin while a blend of glycolic, phytic, malic, mandelic and lactic acids exfoliate to boost surface renewal.

Concentration Levels for Squalane

Squalane is typically used at concentrations ranging from 1-15%:

  • 1-5%: Ideal for lightweight hydration in moisturizers and serums.

  • 5-15%: Higher concentrations are common in facial oils, balms, and deeply moisturizing treatments.

Its non-irritating and gentle nature allows for higher usage levels without causing adverse effects.

Is It Okay to Use Squalane Daily?

Yes, squalane is safe for daily use and works well in both morning and evening routines. For best results, apply squalane to slightly damp skin to lock in moisture and enhance hydration.

Who Should Use Squalane?

Squalane is suitable for almost everyone, thanks to its lightweight, non-irritating nature:

  • Dry or dehydrated skin: If your skin feels tight or flaky, squalane helps restore hydration and lock in moisture.

  • Oily and acne-prone skin: Squalane hydrates without clogging pores, making it an excellent choice for balancing oily skin.

  • Sensitive skin: Squalane’s soothing properties can calm irritation and reduce redness without causing further discomfort.

  • Mature skin: As natural oil production declines with age, squalane keeps the skin soft, smooth, and more elastic.

Whether your goal is hydration, barrier support, or balancing oil production, squalane is a simple, effective addition to any skincare routine.

What Skincare Ingredients Pair Well with Squalane?

Squalane works effectively alongside:

  • Hyaluronic acid: Attracts water to the skin, while squalane seals in hydration. Hyaluronic acid and squalane help to deeply moisturize dehydrated skin.

  • Ceramides: Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss. They work well with other humectants to soothe the skin and prevent irritation from other active ingredients with exfoliating properties.

  • Retinoids: When layered under retinoids, squalane can act as a hydrating buffer against potential irritation. Together they effectively promote renewed skin while minimizing risk of irritation.

  • Niacinamide: Soothes inflammation, regulates oil production, and enhances barrier repair. Paired in formulations with squalane, niacinamide can promote intense soothing and hydration suitable to all skin types including dry/sensitive skin.

  • Vitamin C: Combines hydration with antioxidant protection to brighten and revitalize the skin. Paired with squalane, vitamin C can help restore hydration and help skin appear brighter and more even.

Apply squalane as the final step to lock in water-based ingredients and maximize their benefits.

Are There Any Ingredients that Should Not Be Used with Squalane?

Squalane is highly stable and works well with most ingredients, but avoid pairing it with heavy occlusives like petroleum jelly, as this may reduce squalane’s lightweight feel.
